The company said the round would support the growth of its AI-powered farming business, and G2 turned that financing into a broader product line for farms that want chemical-free weed control at commercial scale. Carbon was founded in Seattle in 2018 by Paul Mikesell, who previously co-founded Isilon Systems and Clustrix and later worked as Uber's director of infrastructure engineering in Seattle. The company has grown into a global agriculture robotics business with U.S. and European manufacturing, growers in 15 countries, and a product line spanning LaserWeeder G2 and Carbon ATK autonomy. The operating problem is not subtle. Specialty crop growers face labor shortages, herbicide constraints, mechanical cultivation limits, soil disturbance, and pressure to increase yield without adding chemical residue. Carbon's answer is a tractor-pulled implement that uses cameras, AI models, and high-power lasers to identify weeds and kill them at the meristem without touching the crop or soil. G2 expands the product range across smaller and larger farms. Carbon lists models from G2 200 through G2 1200, with the G2 600 using 24 240-watt diode lasers, 36 high-resolution cameras, and coverage of 1.5 to 3 acres per hour, while the 40-foot G2 1200 is aimed at organic corn and soybean farms. The product page also claims sub-millimeter accuracy, up to 99% weed kill, more than 100 AI crop models, Carbon Ops Center, and remote support. The competitive field includes mechanical weeders, herbicide programs, hand-weeding crews, FarmWise, Verdant Robotics, Blue River-style precision spraying, Naio Technologies, Ecorobotix, and tractor autonomy systems that address different parts of the field-labor problem. Carbon's distinction is a commercial laser-weeding platform with grower footprint, manufacturing capacity, and software tools around field performance rather than only a prototype machine. Public material still needs careful attribution around economics. Carbon reports cost reduction, yield, payback, and support claims, but site-level cost per acre, uptime through full seasons, renewal rates, and crop-by-crop reliability are not disclosed in a standardized way. The strategic question is whether laser weeding becomes a normal farm operations asset rather than premium equipment for early adopters.
