About BladeBUG
BladeBUG develops and operates robotic inspection methods for wind-turbine blades, combining a blade-crawling robot with ultrasonic non-destructive-testing payloads. The robot detects fibre wrinkles, delaminations, bondline failures, voids and cracks that may not be visible from a conventional surface inspection.
The system is positioned for uptower or in-service blade inspection, where the robot places the sensing payload against the blade surface and captures data for maintenance decisions. BladeBUG has demonstrated the method on operating turbines. Inspection procedure, certification and defect thresholds vary by wind farm, access, weather and blade construction, with operator review part of the maintenance workflow.
