About HII
HII is organised around Ingalls Shipbuilding, Newport News Shipbuilding and Mission Technologies. The first two divisions construct and sustain major U.S. naval vessel classes, while Mission Technologies supplies unmanned systems, C5ISR, electronic warfare, AI and training capabilities. This structure gives the group both a large industrial base and an internal route for fielding autonomous maritime platforms.
Robotics increasingly also shapes how HII manufactures. Ingalls and Newport News have introduced robotic fabrication, automated steel processing and cobot applications, while the HYPR initiative is developing AI-enabled production cells for the ROMULUS uncrewed surface-vessel programme. The August 2026 HD Hyundai Heavy Industries welding pilot extends that automation into unit-fabrication work that had remained predominantly manual.
