About Symbio
SymbioDCS was a middleware and Python programming framework for industrial robot cells that combined camera and force-torque data with motion planning and feedback control. Instead of relying only on fixed trajectories, the controller adjusted robot motion during contact-rich assembly, allowing existing arms to cope with part variation and insertion uncertainty. Manufacturing engineers could add the software, sensors and compute to established automation hardware rather than replacing the cell with a proprietary robot.
The company deployed the technology in automotive production. Ford used Symbio-controlled robots for transmission assembly, while Toyota applied SymbioDCS to moving production lines and processes including wax application. These programmes showed how adaptive control could sit between plant engineering and the robot controller in repetitive production. Symbio ceased operations in August 2022, so the record describes a completed industrial-AI company rather than a currently available software platform.
