About SynTouch
BioTac used an elastic skin filled with conductive fluid around a rigid internal core. Electrodes measured impedance changes as the surface deformed, while separate pressure, temperature and vibration channels captured complementary aspects of contact. This allowed a robotic finger to estimate force, texture, slip and thermal properties through one fingertip-shaped sensor.
Researchers integrated BioTac through ROS and other control environments for grasping, prosthetics and material-recognition experiments. The technology originated from University of Southern California research and became one of the better-known commercial multimodal tactile sensors. SynTouch operated from 2008 until closing in 2024 and is now an historical tactile-sensing company.
