Optimus combines bipedal mobility, articulated hands, cameras and learned control for navigation and manipulation. Tesla develops the robot with teleoperation, human demonstrations, simulation and real-world robot data, using the company's perception, planning and onboard inference work for task learning.
Tesla is developing Optimus first for material handling and production-support work in its factories. In April 2026 it said first-generation production lines were being installed ahead of planned volume production, while describing the robot itself as still in development.
