AVL and ARTI field-test GPS-independent autonomous tractors

Oct 16, 2025 · Demonstration · AVL · Simulation

AVL and ARTI field-tested a modular autonomy system that converts tractors for driverless operation, including navigation when GPS is degraded or unavailable.

  • The collaborators integrated ARTI's hardware-agnostic autonomy software with AVL's eTractor platform, engineering expertise and test facilities.
  • The system combines LiDAR-based perception, path planning, steering and braking controls with a browser interface for remote mission planning, monitoring and telemetry.
  • Real-world trials addressed crop-row perception, obstacle detection, dust, vibration, changing terrain and safe operation of multi-ton agricultural machinery.

AVL is a global mobility technology company founded in Graz in 1948. It supplies engineering, simulation, testing, instrumentation and software across vehicle propulsion, batteries, electronics and automated driving. For autonomous systems, AVL combines scenario generation, virtual development, sensor and controller testing, proving-ground work and production engineering, helping vehicle makers move functions from models and data through safety validation into road vehicles.
