U.S. Navy awards HyperKelp USD 1.3 million sensing contract

Nov 25, 2024 · Contract Award · HyperKelp · Maritime

HyperKelp received a USD 1.3 million U.S. Navy contract to advance buoy-based counter-hypersonic detection technology.

  • The Phase II effort covered a Kelp Smart Buoy sensor suite for detecting hypersonic aircraft from the ocean surface.
  • The system was designed to integrate with Navy command-and-control systems for real-time intelligence sharing.
  • KSB units had already undergone testing at government-sponsored Trident Spectre 2024 and Silent Swarm events.

HyperKelp develops autonomous buoy networks for persistent maritime monitoring. Its sensor platforms combine onboard processing, communications and configurable payloads to collect ocean and security data without the cost and limited persistence of crewed vessels. NATO DIANA selected the company for its 2026 programme, adding third-party validation and access to allied accelerator sites, test centres and defence users.
