Proteus Maritime and Edith Cowan University receive A$200,000 undersea-networking grant

Oct 9, 2025 · Award · Proteus Maritime · Communications

Proteus Maritime and Edith Cowan University received an A$200,000 Western Australian Government grant to develop resilient undersea communications for defence applications.

  • The Defence and Research Teaming grant supports an underwater mesh network connecting submarines, subsea drones and sensors.
  • Proteus Maritime and ECU had previously developed the concept through Exercise Western Dawn, where it was named the overall winner.
  • The project targets resilient communications for underwater surveillance and other operations in Australian undersea environments.

Proteus Maritime develops communications, networking and autonomy technology for distributed undersea systems. The Australian company works on resilient links between submarines, uncrewed underwater vehicles, seabed sensors and surface assets where bandwidth and connectivity are constrained. Its engineering combines acoustic communications, mission software and multi-node coordination for defence and offshore maritime operations.
