C-Ray amphibious robot showcased at Sea-Air-Space 2023

Apr 10, 2023 · Demonstration · Pliant Energy Systems · Maritime

Pliant founder Pietro Filardo showcased the C-Ray amphibious robot during a Defense News interview recorded at the 2023 Sea-Air-Space exposition.

  • C-Ray uses an undulating propulsion system rather than propellers to move through surf.
  • The vehicle can transition from swimming to crawling onto a beach.
  • The showcase accompanied Pliant's selection to exhibit at the ONR and Naval Research Laboratory booth.

Pliant Energy Systems develops amphibious robots and propulsion systems based on undulating flexible surfaces. Its platforms can swim, crawl and transition between water, sand, snow and ice for nearshore sensing, inspection and mine-countermeasure missions. Its first-party profile lists 24 granted patents and research support from ONR, DOE, NSF, USDA and NYSERDA; NATO DIANA selected the company for its 2026 programme.
