TerraFirma raises $115M for robotic construction
The former SpaceX team is scaling remote-operated heavy equipment, command centres and vertically integrated construction projects.
The financing includes a $100 million Series A led by Kleiner Perkins, with participation from Bain Capital Ventures, Glade Brook, BANNER, Saga Ventures, Trust Ventures, Definition, PEAK6, Magnetar and Ravelin.
Founded by former SpaceX engineers, TerraFirma is building a vertically integrated construction operator rather than only selling autonomy software.
Its platform combines AI-enabled project planning, remote command centres and retrofitted excavators, dozers, loaders, rollers and skid steers.
Operators remain in the loop, but can remotely coordinate multiple machines instead of operating one vehicle from its cab. TerraFirma says this can make each operator up to 300% more effective.
The company uses the system on its own commercial and government projects, including excavation and grading for a Starbucks, a sports arena and a power substation in Texas, alongside international infrastructure and logistics work for the US government.
TerraFirma says it grew more than 10× over the past year and plans to operate three large robotic construction fleets across three continents by the end of October.
