Badger Technologies is building Marty robots into retail shelf operations

More than 300 Stop & Shop stores, Marty upgrades, and Digital Teammate analytics give Badger a retail aisle automation record.

Badger Technologies and Stop & Shop announced upgraded Marty robots across more than 300 stores in September 2023. The earlier 2019 rollout made Marty one of the grocery sector?s first large in-store robot deployments, and the upgrade kept the robot inside everyday aisle operations rather than a lab setting.

The store workflow is aisle traversal for hazard detection, shelf checks, and associate alerts. Grocery stores are messy robotics environments: shoppers move carts, products shift, spills appear, displays change, and associates need alerts that fit store labor rather than extra screens nobody checks.

Badger launched its Digital Teammate platform on May 8, 2025. The platform uses mobile data, analytics, and computer vision to support out-of-stock checks, price discrepancy detection, safety hazard alerts, and food-safety monitoring.

Badger Technologies is a Jabil business, which gives the company a different profile from a venture-backed retail robotics startup. Manufacturing, service operations, and enterprise customer support matter when robots are expected to patrol hundreds of stores instead of a few showcase aisles.

The competitive field includes Simbe, Brain Corp inventory scanning, Zebra retail systems, Trax, Focal Systems, shelf-camera platforms, and manual store-walk processes. Badger?s distinction is the multipurpose aisle robot: Marty began with hazard detection and now carries a broader store-operations data role through Digital Teammate.

Public material does not show scan accuracy by category, issue resolution time, associate labor savings, customer retention rate, robot uptime by store, pricing, service response time, or renewal terms by retailer. The Stop & Shop deployment gives Badger scale, while Digital Teammate still needs customer-level operating proof.

Badger?s strategic test is whether an aisle robot can become store labor infrastructure. If Digital Teammate turns daily patrols into useful shelf, safety, and food-quality actions, Marty becomes more than a visible robot in the aisle; it becomes a mobile data layer for grocery operations.
