Element Logic is building Thalia automation around Germany's largest AutoStore

A September 9, 2025 Element Logic record puts Thalia at 280,000 bin locations, 530 R5 robots, 96 ports, and a two-phase Marl omnichannel hub.

Thalia At Marl Scale

Element Logic published on September 9, 2025 that Thalia Bücher had commissioned it for a large automation project at the Marl omnichannel hub. Thalia describes itself as the market-leading bookseller in German-speaking markets, with physical books, e-books, audiobooks, and around 5,000 events per year across its customer surface. Thalia's automation problem is mixed retail flow at scale: B2C and B2B orders, inbound stocking, picking, packing, and shipping all have to work through one hub. Element Logic is general contractor for the intralogistics scope, not only an AutoStore equipment supplier.

The first phase includes 280,000 bin storage locations, 530 AutoStore R5 robots, 69 connected picking ports, and 27 inbound ports. Element Logic says the system will process five-digit bin volumes per hour, with a throughput estimate of 13,000 totes per hour. Picking will run through two tunnel-style zones, while AutoLight lets port work feed up to four destination bins. A multi-kilometer conveyor network connects AutoStore with fast-moving goods, packing, and outbound flow.

AutoStore Integrator Credibility

Element Logic company material records a 1985 founding, more than 950 employees, operations across 30 countries, and world-first AutoStore partner status. Its AutoStore material adds more than 400 installations, partner status since 2003, 35-plus countries with installations, and 99.7 percent uptime as system context. That track record changes how the Thalia project reads: the 530-robot system is a scale-up inside an established AutoStore integrator model.

Public material does not publish Thalia labor hours removed, order cycle time after go-live, port utilization, software exception rates, or peak-day service levels. The first phase is slated to become operational in early 2026, so the current proof is contracted system scale and integrator track record. The clearest public metric is totes processed per labor hour at Marl after commissioning under Element Logic.
